The Passion of the Christ, released in 2004, made a big impact on the world upon its release. Non-Christians and Christians alike flocked to theaters to see the movie about Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. The film grossed more than $611 million, making it the 11th highest-grossing film in history and the highest-grossing R-rated film. It was directed, produced and co-written by Mel Gibson. The movie focuses on the last 12 hours of Jesus' life and begins in the Garden of Olives where Jesus has gone to pray after the Last Supper. Betrayed by Judas, He is then arrested and taken within the walls of Jerusalem where the leaders confront Jesus and his trial results in condemnation to death. The film isn’t recommended for family viewing. Children under high school age would have a difficult time watching it due to the goriness of the flogging and crucifixion scenes. The film is valuable in that it gives viewers a good idea of the sacrifice Christ made to reconcile sinful humans to a loving Father God. Rating: R Details
