How can an 80-year old woman manage a dysfunctional family? How does a 17-year old woman handle a family trying to marry her off to the best suitor? Empress Augusta Helena, who was to become St. Helena, and Sylvia, a young woman of the Roman Empire in 325 C.E., faced these very issues. Search for the Cross recounts the story of the marriage of Sylvia and the last years of the life of this powerful empress. This novel is set in a period that was a turning point in world history. The Emperor Constantine, son of Helena, permitted toleration of Christianity and then gave it a favored status in the empire. The Council of Nicea, attended by the emperor, shaped Christian doctrine. Following the council, Constantine reportedly had his son executed and his wife parboiled in her bath. His mother, Helena, then went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to solidify his hold on the eastern part of his empire. According to legend, she also journeyed to find the cross and the tomb of Jesus and the location of Golgotha. The Roman officer, who accompanies Helena and is to win Sylvia over other suitors, becomes a Christian on this journey. As a saint, Helena is pictured with two symbols: her crown and the cross she gave the church. Dr. Foster is a United Methodist minister, a clinical psychologist, and a lawyer. She has worked with people at the end and the beginning of adult life who have struggled with family issues. She has a Ph.D. and a J.D. from Northwestern University and an M.Div. from Garrett Theological Seminary. She has written some 54 adult books, chapters, articles, videotape scripts, and 23 children's books.
