Overview

Roxana purports to be the autobiography of Mademoiselle de Beleau, the willful daughter of French Protestant refugees. This beautiful, ambitious, unscrupulous woman, who begins as the wife of a brewer by whom she has five children, moves through a series of adventures in England and on the Continent to become the mistress of a French prince, an English lord, and finally -- it is hinted -- of the king himself. Roxana's story is a romance without any touch of the exotic or improbable; an unromantic romance which brilliantly illustrates Defoe's talent of "lying like the truth".
