Esther... the Girl Who Became Queen (VHS)

If you know the Old Testament story of Esther, you’ll recognize the twists and turns in this recreation of the plot — it’s a story that reveals God’s protection for his brave and obedient followers (Esther and Mordecai) and just punishment for those caught up in pride and trickery (Haman).

The story begins with the conniving Haman who kicks the Queen out of the castle when she refuses to make the king a sandwich. Thus the search begins! A new queen is needed, and needed fast.

Looking for potential candidates in town, Haman spots Mordecai, his long time rival. Mordecai’s refusal to bow to Haman chaps his hide, so he snatches up his sleek cousin Esther in retaliation.

Esther finds herself on stage with talent show contestants competing for the crown, and to her dismay, she wins the favor of King Xerxes! But there’s just one problem: Esther not too keen on being Queen. Her entire life has changed and she had no choice in the matter! Luckily, Mordecai visits her stone balcony with encouraging words: “Trust God — He must have a good reason for you to be here.”

When Esther and Mordecai enter the king’s court, more trouble is on its way. They find the Peaoni Brothers, the most wanted peas in Persia, have snuck into the castle to drop a piano on Xerxes’ head! Loyal Mordecai alerts the king just in time and Haman banishes the Peaoni Brothers to the Island of Perpetual Tickling as their punishment.

But when the king throws Mordecai a parade to thank him for saving his life, guess who is peeved again?Haman couldn’t be more jealous! So he tricks King Xerxes into signing a treaty that will banish Mordecai and his entire family (and that includes Esther) to, you guessed it, the Island of Perpetual Tickling!

When Mordecai finds out, Esther’s true purpose becomes clear: only her boldness to confront the king will be able to save her family. Mordecai reminds her to “Never be afraid to do what’s right,” so she invites the King over for dinner to unveil Haman’s trickery.

THE GOOD GUYS

ESTHER wins the hearts of everyone around her. But when King Xerxes wants this graceful green onion to be the new queen, Esther’s not sure she wants to give up her normal life as a small town girl! With the encouraging help of her cousin Mordecai, Esther realizes why God wants her to be queen — she’s the only one who can convince the King to save her people!

KING XERXES, played by Mr. Nezzar, is a lovable, friendly guy who always wants to do what is right. When the previous queen can no longer rule by his side, Xerxes sets up a talent show to find a stunning replacement. As soon as he lays eyes on Esther, he’s smitten with her green-onion grace.

MORDECAI is Esther’s cousin and a loyal servant of King Xerxes. Played by Pa Grape, Mordecai is honest and trustworthy. He’s the one who lets Esther know she not only has to follow God’s plan and be the queen, but she also needs to be brave to save her people.

THE SCRIBE diligently writes down the King’s every move. Played by Larry the Cucumber, he reads to the king at his bedside, recapping Xerxes’ day as the king drifts off to sleep. Cute and helpful, the scribe scribbles away, following the King like a shadow.

THE BAD GUYS

HAMAN is one mean gourd. Played by Mr. Lunt, the cunning Haman is supposed to be a trustworthy right hand man, but all he really wants to do is to look important and boss other people around! As Mordecai’s main foe, Haman will do anything to get Mordecai and his family in big trouble.

THE PEAONI BROTHERS are shifty crooks! Played by Phillipe and Jean Claude Pea, this duo might seem pretty nice, but the king and his friends really have to watch their back when the Peaoni Brothers are around!
