Highway Vid is Youth Specialties' exciting new series of videos. Each package is a video magazine of 5-6 segments on vital themes to youth - their lives, their challenges, their joys, their insecurities, their questions... and their Savior.
Every installment of Highway Vid is themed. A subtle thread ties the segments together, treating important themes like self-esteem, grace, discouragement, encouragement, grief, guilt, and forgiveness. Taken together, the segments will present thoughtful - and thought-provoking - video statements from many sides in many modes.
Segments are of varying lengths, dictated by the content rather than artificial constraints. The total package (whether viewed at once, or through an evening, or over the course of a month) will therefore "breathe" freely. Youth leaders, in group sessions, will have the maximum latitude to use the segments as jumping-off points for discussions, or integral think-pieces to explore themes... and lead students to explore themselves.
Every Highway Vid installment includes a Curriculum Guide for Leaders - a booklet that will supplement the segments; provides hints and guidance for the leader in group settings; offers reproducible checklists, activities, challenges, and journal-type action-prompts based on the videos. As usual, all such pages are also available as downloads from the YS website as well, for maximum flexibility.
The first video package, on the theme of getting' through everyday life, is titled MOST LIKELY TO SURVIVE. What more rock-bottom topic could kick off the series? Kids can have knowledge in some areas, confidence in others, and experience elsewhere...but at the end of the day (literally) manykids still harbor anxiety about co-existence. It's "feeling a part" vs "feeling apart."
In the various treatments, young viewers will learn that they are not alone... they will learn how other kids (on the segments and, through the curriculum, in their youth groups) react to the same fears and perceptions... they will learn not one but several ways to cope and overcome, through the lessons inherent in the segments.
MOST LIKELY TO SURVIVE
1. With parents
"BBQ" - Video, Comedy - See how Ryan is able to resolve his love for the BBQ with his overbearing, Marine drill-sergeant Dad.
2. With friends
Interview/Documentary - High School students are asked how they "survive" in a world a friendship, peer pressure, and self-becoming.
3. With life (school, career pressure)
"Mini Scrolls" - Mocumentary Comedy - We all base our life on something, whether we choose to or not... see how ridiculous we can seem.
4. With God
"You Are Everything" - Music Video/Story - To really know God, we have to see past friends, family, school, church...and even ourselves.
5. Trying to do it alone
Community Video - Comedy - Sometimes going through life by ourselves seems like the easiest way to go, but how long can you last?
