The First Videobook:
The year the internet was born, Jim Fitzgerald had an unexpected vision after a three day fast. Over the course of several hours, he outlined a compelling new way to produce the entire Bible on video for the first time—to reach millions of people around the world who found the Bible difficult to read. Amazed by what the Lord had just shown him, he promised to devote his life to the vision.
He had no idea how difficult it would prove to be. At first, producers told him that his concept for a Videobook was technologically impossible to carry out in 1991. And even if he could produce it, they said no one would ever watch it; and he’d never raise the money for such an extensive project anyway.
But the Great Commission said, “Go into all the world and make disciples… teaching them to do all that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20). The all that Jesus had commanded was to be found in the Bible. It was essential to living the Christian life.
Yet millions of people were not reading God’s word. Biblically illiteracy continued to grow, though the Bible was an inexpensive commodity and many new versions had appeared.
This inspired book often sat unused on people’s shelves and failed to keep pace with the use of electronic media. Many people said they were too busy to read the Bible or it was too difficult to understand.
There had to be a way to translate the Bible to visual media! Founding WatchWORD Productions in 1993, Fitzgerald set out with a small team to bring the Bible—the world’s most important information—to the most powerful media format in history, Video.
Today, THE WATCHWORD BIBLE® is a reality. For the first time, the entire New Testament can be watched word for word in a compelling, effective way on video.
Its creation coincides with an unparalleled explosion in digital media distribution, from the availability of hundreds of Satellite and Cable channels, to DVDs, iPods, Cell Phones, and of course, waves of video over the Internet. Subscribers to the very first online Video Bible can watch a chapter a day with automated tools and reading plan—to read the whole New Testament every year online (WATCHYOURBIBLE.COM). There has never been an easier way to read and remember God’s word!
WATCHWORD WORLDWIDE
In 2001, Fitzgerald also founded WATCHWORD WORLDWIDE, a 501 (c) (3) non profit organization, to help sponsor production of the Old Testament and versions of the New Testament in major world languages. With this support and for use with other versions, WATCHWORD PRODUCTIONS finished re-creating all 26-hours of New Testament video background in 2006 after six years’ work.
Leveraging 15 years’ effort and nearly $10 million spent so far on THE WATCHWORD BIBLE project, a three-year Japanese New Testament was finished in Japan by CHEA Ministries in 2006. An Arabic version is now 50% complete and being broadcast in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe via Sat-7 satellite. A Hindi language version is in pre-production. Other languages are also now in planning, including German, Spanish and Chinese versions.
Toward the vision of completing the whole Bible on video for the first time, plans call for the Old Testament to be produced in phases, beginning with a six-hour production of THE PSALMS. Shot on location in Israel in High Definition, this 18-month-long production will cost $1 million. The entire Old Testament will be approximately 75 hours in length.
When completed, Lord willing, the whole Bible will be approximately 100 hours of compelling digital video, accessible by book and by chapter in a variety of ways. May God use this unique tool to help to saturate the world with his word!
